I’m Back

I’m back team. Took a break for a couple of days to get some stuff done. Had some fun Saturday night with my friends and got back to my apartment on Sunday. Got some good lifts in on both days this weekend. Coached a couple basketball games during the day on Saturday and got some good wins. Watched Boiler Room with my dad Friday night which was pretty chill.

Boiler Room’s a great movie. First time I saw it I was in a personal finance class in high school. The teacher who showed it to us was a cool dude. He was one of the younger teachers and was probably in his late 20’s or early 30’s. He had a nice haircut and cool car. He taught me how to shuffle cards. He was also the economics teacher. I remember going on school trips to the Fed in his class. A couple of my friends bought black and milds and acted like we knew how to smoke cigars.

Boiler Room is about a chop shop investment bank that sells securities of fake companies to naïve people with money. The main character starts working there to impress his dad. At the beginning of the movie he’s running an illegal casino out of his house and his dad disapproves. He gets to the investment bank and begins training to take the series 7 exam. Ben Affleck is the senior employee who comes in to impress the new guys with his money and attitude. His attitude actually reminded me of the teacher that we had.

I remember us students talking about how our teacher made his money. Rumor had it that he’d made a bunch of money in the bond market. I think he drove a BMW. I remember one kid being a little skeptical of those stories. He was suspicious if he actually made that money ethically.

A couple of years ago I read a story in the newspaper where that teacher was going to jail. He became a principal for another school and was caught embezzling funds. Life is funny sometimes.
