Too Much Coffee
I like coffee. It gets me fired up. It makes me excited. I spend 8 hours per day, Monday through Friday, at my boring job. When I drink a little coffee I get fired up to work on our CMS. I get fired up to prepare next week’s promo. I get fired up to talk to the guys in the office about something extremely dumb. I’ve also found that I get better workouts after drinking coffee. There is a fine line, though.
Sometimes I have a little too much coffee in the afternoon. I judge my enthusiasm and energy level in the afternoon and decide if I have enough juice to get a good workout done. Sometimes I decide I don’t have enough juice and I have that second cup and boy let me tell you, that workout is glorious. I’m crushing dips and squats and presses. Yesterday I benched 185 for two reps and the spotter didn’t touch the bar at all. New PR! But then it dawns on me. I do my after workout cardio (usually walking on the treadmill for 2 miles) and my 10 minutes of stretching. I get in my car, riding high on passion and pride. I get in my apartment, I take a shower, and I make my night time protein shake. Then it sets in. That juice is still there. I’m gonna struggle to sleep tonight.
It’s a vicious cycle. My alarm goes off at 6:30. I snooze until 7 and I’m still tired. Not only am I tired but now I’m also late. I couldn’t fall asleep until around 1:30 last night. Brutal. I laid in bed at around 10 and read some of my book. I’m almost done with it. My friend gave it to me. It’s titled “The Net Delusion”. It’s an interesting read but I disagree with its conclusions. The conclusions are derived from the idea that democracy = good and a truly liberated internet doesn’t lead civilizations toward more democracy. Therefore a truly liberated internet = bad. I disagree with the blanket assumption that democracy always = good.
I don’t fall asleep until around 1:30. I only get around 5 hours of quality sleep. I drink 1 cup of coffee in the morning. That gets me through the AM. I eat lunch and then it’s around 2 PM and I am out of gas. I reach for that second cup of coffee to give me some oomph in the afternoon. That gives me a little kick and I can get some stuff done. That fire burns quickly, however, and I know I want to get a quality workout in after work. I reach for the second cup around 4 PM and the cycle begins anew.
Fortunately the weekends coming up and with it comes an opportunity to reset. Make sure I get some quality Zs on Friday and Saturday. I have a game early on Saturday (I believe 9 AM) and I have a practice with the guys tonight (Friday). I want to get a quick run (3 miler) in tonight before practice but I’ll see how I feel with the cars and the snow. Hopefully I can get a run in, stretch, shower, protein shake, get my laundry together, go to practice, and then go back to my parents’ house tonight to do my laundry. Seems doable.
Bitcoin’s been coming back with a vengeance. Michael Saylor’s company (MSTR) held a Bitcoin conference going through the ideas and processes a company would go through to put bitcoin on their balance sheet. The discussion between him and Ross Stevens was incredible and Ross provided many enlightening soundbites. The anecdotes about how central banks capitulated to market pressure were great.
SpaceX’s treasurer was in attendance and this led to much speculation across the internet. After the first day of the conference, Elon Musk (founder of SpaceX) removed #bitcoin from his bio and started tweeting about dogecoin again. This led to more speculation. Is Elon adding bitcoin to his balance sheet and removed it from his profile to avoid SEC investigations? Did the conference turn Elon off? Nobody knows. Either way Bitcoin will be fine. The price in 10 years will be much higher than it is today. What it does in the short term is uncertain (although I have my optimistic presumptions) but the longer the time frame the more certain the outcome is.
