Big Swoll
I’m going to stop distance running. I’m just going way too hard. I’m wiping myself out. There’s no way I can make strength gains if I’m running 7 miles, 3 times per week. I woke up mad early this morning and did some deep thinking about it. I’d like to get stronger and feel more alive. I don’t think running is going to help me do that. I also noticed that I’ve lost a lot of explosiveness ever since I started doing distance running.
I started distance running when my ex broke up with me the first time (actually second out of three lol). I was messing around with my buddy at my beach house after our second date. She came back with me to the beach house and we had a nice night of drinking and fun. My one buddy signed up for a marathon and was goading me to do the same. In an effort to look cool and impulsive I capitulated and signed up right then and there. I ended up bailing and not doing it and always had a defeated feeling about it. About one year later she broke up with me and for some reason I felt like I had to excise that demon.
I started training like a lunatic about one month later. I had about 2 months of training and I ran a 3:24 marathon. Pretty wild. I did it. It’s time to move on. I want to get strong and explosive. I want to finger roll when I get to the basket. I want to push people off the spot. I want to be a beast.
I’ve been lifting weights for a little while but I think I’ve been doing a little too much. I’ve definitely gotten stronger but I’ve hit some hard plateaus. I’ve been doing 2 push days and 2 pull days each week. On my push day I’ve been doing 10 sets of squats, overhead press, bench press, dips, pushups. On my pull days I’ve been doing 10 sets of deadlifts, rows, and pullups. I’m going to roll this back to 7 sets of squats, overhead press, and bench press, and 5 sets of dips, pushups on my push days. For my pull days I’m going to do 7 sets of deadlifts and rows and 5 sets of pullups.
On the days I run I’m going to limit myself to 3 miles instead of 7. I may just skip run days and do more lift days or play basketball sometimes also. Got to switch it up. Men’s league going to be starting up again so I want to make sure I’m in peak basketball playing shape. I was running 3 miles before playing for a while but that’s making me a little too wiped. Going to just play basketball instead on those days and see if that brings back some of my explosiveness. Onward fellas.
